The village of Downers Grove is rich in history. Pierce Downer, originally from New York, was the first settler to arrive in Downers Grove in 1832. He camped alone in a grove of oak trees during his time, which was located in the fork of two ancient Indian trails. He claimed the 160 acres of prairie and timberland surrounding him by marking it off with stakes. It cost him $1.25 an acre. Other early settlers were soon to follow.
Israel Blodgett left his homestead near Naperville and came to Downers Grove three years after the Black Hawk War ended to establish a farm and blacksmith shop south of the would-be Maple Avenue. A good portion of his early customers were Native Americans that brought Israel their guns for him to repair.
Samuel Curtiss was another early founder. Curtiss claimed land just north of Blodgett’s homestead and is now the center of the village’s downtown business district. Henry Carter was the next founder of note. He opened both a post office and the first store in town. He also sold parts of his land stake early one, sparking growth and new shops in the downtown.
The construction of the Illinois-Michigan canal began in 1836. In the subsequent years, many of the workers began to flock to Downers Grove. This included immigrants from most western European countries.
The next infrastructure to spark growth was the railroad. In 1864, the first train ran on the tracks from Aurora, IL to Chicago. This helped drive both agricultural commerce and passenger traffic between Downers Grove and Chicago. Early commuters actually rode in freight cars, a far cry from the comforts of todays Metra commuter trains.
In 1873, Downers Grove was approved for village incorporation. The village chose T.S. Rogers to be the village’s first president, in which he served sixteen years. By 1885, the village population had grown to 500. In 1888, the village ordinance built the first sewers. Then in the 1890s, the land was subdivided in the northwest section of the village by E.H. Prince. He improved a pond and added small parks in the subdivided land.
In 1922, a Downers Grove resident, Lottie Homan O’Neill, was the first woman elected to the Illinois legislature. With the exception of two years, she served in the House and Senate until 1963. The village’s centennial was celebrated on July 4, 1932. To help raise spirits during the Depression, a parade and pageant occurred. Productive farms bordered Downers Grove on the southeast, south, and west after the end of World War II. Today, the village has a population of over 42,500 and spreads over thirteen square miles.
