Edina is about as close to Minneapolis as you can be without being in Minneapolis. It’s located just southwest of the city and is technically considered within the Twin Cities Metro area—although it’s about 10-15 minutes outside of the city proper. It’s still within the Minneapolis beltway (Interstate 494 loop), which borders it to the south.

While Edina began as a small farming community in the 1860s, it has evolved into a suburban-type area that’s home to more than 50,000 people today. Back when it was founded, there was actually a dispute about its name, which ended in a raucous town meeting that had to be disbanded! The fight was whether to name the town either Hennepin Park, Westfield or Edina. Edina actually had little support at the outset; however, the town factions were so divided that Edina ended up winning the vote narrowly as a third-party vote!

Today, Edina residents are plenty happy with the name—and plenty happy to live here! The city’s motto is and has been for many years, “For Living, Learning, Raising Families & Doing Business.”

If you’re a shopping fan, Southdale Center, Galleria Edina and 50th & France are all must-visit shopping destinations in Edina. These shopping centers are all surrounded by other boutique shops and stores in shopping districts—part of what Edina is known for. To complement this upscale experience, you can also visit any of the area’s country clubs, including the Interlachen Country Club or the Edina Country Club—both with beautiful golf courses. Or, you can hit the links at a public course like Braemar Golf Course.

If you’re more of the outdoorsy type, Edina is far enough removed from the Twin Cities to give you a few wonderful opportunities to connect with nature. Visit Rosland Park, Pamela Park, Bredesen Park or any of the other notable park spaces in the area. There are also dozens of lakes and ponds nearby, living up to Minnesota’s reputation as “The Land of 10,000 Lakes.” For family fun, visit the Edina Aquatic Center in the summer to beat the heat.

Expect all four seasons if you’re moving to Edina—especially winter. Winters can be both cold and snowy in this part of the country, so pack a few extra shovels in your storage pod and dress in layers during the back half of the year. Nighttime temperatures can plummet into the single digits and below, especially with the wind chill. And, with the occasional blizzard or heavy snowfall, you might need to dig out your car before work in the morning.

Outside of winter, there’s a lot to love about Edina’s seasonal weather. The spring thaw brings with it rainy weather and rising temperatures, which give way to humid summers. Expect mid-to-upper 70s and low 80s in the summer months, with plenty of sun to justify a trip to the local lake to cool off. Fall is a windy time of year with the occasional morning frost.

Because it’s right outside of Minneapolis, there’s a big presence for Minnesota sports teams in this town. Football fans can trek into the city for a Viking’s game at U.S. Bank Stadium, while baseball fans venture to Target field to watch the Minnesota Twins play. Prefer basketball? The Minnesota Timberwolves are the only team in town. Ice hockey fans can cheer on the Minnesota Wild.

Speaking of ice hockey, Edina has actually been called the “center of the center” of the American ice hockey scene by ESPN. The reason is that there are so many boys and girls youth hockey teams that practice and play in this area. The area also sees many professional and Division I players during the offseason, who come here to practice.

Not only is there a laundry list of famous athletes, celebrities and personalities who hail from Edina or currently call it home, but the city itself also has plenty of interesting pop culture about it.

Several movies have been filmed here, including the Coen Brothers’ film A Serious Man. Scenes from the movie Jingle All the Way were shot in Edina, as were scenes from Little Big League. The city even gets a shout-out in the much-beloved hockey trilogy The Mighty Ducks, when one of the players, Adam Banks, is introduced as being from Edina.

The reason Edina is such a booming area with rising home values and income has largely to do with the strong corporate presence in the area. A surprising number of corporations have their headquarters in Edina, including household names such as United Healthcare, Dairy Queen and Orange Julius.

With 8,500 K-12 students and roughly 1,100 teachers to serve them, the district enjoys smaller-than-average class sizes. The district encompasses six elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school, Edina High School.

Outside of the Edina public school system, there are also three private schools: Our Lady of Grace Catholic School, Golden Years Montessori and Calvin Christian School.

Moving to Edina means embracing a high standard of living in a place that’s the best of all worlds. It’s closer to one of the epicenters of the Midwest—the Twin Cities Metro area—yet far enough outside to call home.
