MI-BOX Moving Guide to  Indialantic, Florida

Moving to Indialantic

Indialantic is a small city located in Brevard County along Florida’s Space Coast. This is an ideal city to reside in for many reasons, including its welcoming atmosphere and never-ending entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Also, the school district that serves Indialantic provides top-notch education and prepares students for higher-level learning. If you are moving to the Space Coast searching for new job opportunities, Indialantic’s booming economy and future job market show great promise. Whatever your reason for moving to the Space Coast, the various storage units in Indialantic and moving services are sure to assist in a hassle-free move.

Indialantic History

Indialantic’s roots date back to the early 1900s when a man by the name of Ernest Kouwen-Hoven decided to purchase a plot of land east of Melbourne. In 1916, he began his quest to develop the land. The area was subdivided into residential lots, a golf course, streets, a public beachfront, and a hotel area. This original city he established became known as Indialantic-by-the-Sea. Due to slow progress in property sales, Kouwen-Hoven decided to build a bridge across the river and expand the community. He finished the construction of the bridge in 1921 at the cost of $100,000, which he financed on his own. Property sales began to soar after the bridge was finished. Between 1919 and 1921, hundreds of lots were sold, while Kouwen-Hoven continued purchasing land to develop the city further.

In 1923, Kouwen-Hoven sold all his land to Herbert R. Earle, who wanted to fulfill Earnest Kouwen-Hoven’s visions for the future of Indialantic. Unfortunately, in 1925, the United States economy began to deteriorate. Florida also experienced two significant hurricanes around this time that further weakened the local economy. As the Great Depression was approaching, Indialantic took a turn for the worst, and Earle lost all of his assets to his lawyer, Harold Emmett.

Throughout the early 1930s, very little was accomplished in Indialantic. Construction was at a standstill, real estate was being sold at very low prices, and the wooden bridge that Kouwen-Hoven built needed repairs. However, by the late 1930s, the city started to get back on its feet. The economy was revived by the establishment of two Naval air stations during the time of World War II. The bridge was repaired entirely by 1947 and accommodated the increased Space Program traffic from the mainland to Patrick Air Force Base. The housing market would soon experience another boom, and Indialantic would once again be a desirable place to live.

In 1952, new town officials were elected, and plans for the city’s future were underway. Improvements included new zoning regulations, maintaining public ownership of the beaches, and new roads. The city’s long-term goals included police and fire stations, public water supply, a postal service, and modernizing the city to make it more appealing. Today, the city still prides itself on its early founders’ ideals while it continues to make advancements towards a promising future.
