MI-BOX Moving Guide to Joliet, Illinois

Moving to Joliet

Joliet —also known as the “Crossroads of Mid-America” — is a city 30 miles (48 km) southwest of Chicago in Will and Kendall counties in the state of Illinois. Not only is it a significant part of Chicago’s southwest metropolitan area, but it is also the county seat for Will County. With a population of 147,344, Joliet is the third-largest city in Illinois.

For those moving to Joliet, there are all sorts of activities to dip one’s toes in. From attending NASCAR races and adrenaline-packed baseball games to immersing oneself in the arts through its countless theatre attractions, there are a plethora of attractions abound in this city. Is it worth moving to Joliet? Find out more about this southwestern Chicago suburb below.

This guide to moving to Joliet is chock-full of all the essential information and helpful tips you need to learn more about Joliet. It includes information on school systems, neighborhoods, recreational activities, and even employment options. Use our guide to find all the key things to know for a smooth transition to Joliet. There is also practical information about Joliet moving companies and the range of storage solutions Joliet has to offer.

Joliet History

Before you pack your bags to get moving to Joliet, here’s a history lesson about the “City of Champions.” In 1673, Louis Jolliet, and his father Jacques Marquette, paddled along the Des Plaines River (which currently runs through present-day Joliet). They ended up camping on a huge mound that was a couple of miles off of present-day Joliet. The hill officially got its name as “Mound Jolliet.” Following the Black Hawk War in 1833, a cabin was constructed on the Des Plaines River by Charles Reed.

Across that river, James, B. Campbell built a village named after his daughter “Juliet.” Just prior to the economic depression of 1837, Juliet was incorporated as a village to cut tax expenses, a regulation that was soon petitioned away by its residents. In 1845, those residents then changed their community’s name from “Juliet” to “Joliet.” The community was incorporated as the city of Joliet in 1852. The city’s initial charter was created by Cornelius Covenhoven Van Horne, the city’s first mayor.

Joliet Geography

Geographically, Joliet has a unique, irregular, and sprawling shape extending into a total of nine different townships, which is more than any other Illinois city. These townships are Joliet, Troy, Jackson, New Lenox, Plainfield, Lockport, Channahon, Na-Au-Say, Seward. Some of these townships are under the administration of nearby counties like Will and Kendall County.
Joliet is considered a ‘Des Plaines River town’ as its downtown area is in the heart of the river’s valley. One can easily notice the valley as you drive along Interstate 80. The otherwise flat highway starts to drop when approaching the river in Joliet. You can also get a great view of downtown Joliet.

Joliet Neighborhoods

One of the things to know before moving to Joliet is that due to the divide of the river running through the city, Joliet has had a typical “east side” and “west side.” Both sides were roughly proportionate in size throughout most of Joliet’s history until the second half of the last century, which is when the westward expansion flourished. In fact, many of Joliet’s businesses moved from its downtown locale to the areas that are west of the river. In 2011, Joliet was ranked the fastest-growing midwestern city in the United States due to this westward expansion project.

If you are considering moving to Chicago’s southwest suburbs, Joliet is worth considering, as it is one of the fastest-growing areas in Illinois. Most shopping centers, strip malls, and stores can be found west of the river, which seems to have more ample parking and easier access. Since the west side of Joliet has expanded quite far, today there is a “west” and “far west” side, the latter of which includes all of the city’s limits up to the border of Kendall County. One interesting tidbit about Joliet is that locals now reference “Central Joliet,” which has now shifted to the west of the Des Plaines River and east of Interstate 55.

Joliet Entertainment Attractions

Beyond the sports activities, there are many local activities and attractions that make Joliet stand out as a city. One of the most famous landmarks is the Joliet Prison, which was featured in the film The Blues Brothers and the FOX series Prison Break. You can get a spooky yet educational tour of this prison at most times of the year. In addition to the Chicagoland Speedway, you can also visit the Route 66 Raceway and Visitor’s Center to catch speed racers in their prime. You can even get behind the wheel and attempt to live out your race car driving fantasy by buying a special tour package at one of the area’s local speedways.

One of the fun things to know before moving to Joliet is that it is only the only city in the whole state with two casinos. And if you are a gambler, the Hollywood Casino in Channahon or the Harrah’s Hotel and Casino in downtown Joliet will meet your needs quite well.

Moving to Joliet with kids? There are a ton of activities in the Joliet area. Visit Splash Station,  a famous water park located within the city’s Channahon locale. Nature-lovers will relish the wilderness of Pilcher State park, a vast nature preserve Joliet is well-known for, as it spans 640 acres and is rich in wildlife. This park alone is enough to keep you occupied for the whole day. But wilderness activities don’t stop here. There are numerous hiking as well as biking trails throughout the city, including the Joliet Junction Trails and Rock Run. Get your fix for riding and running on these trails.

In Joliet, there are attractions for everyone. Theatre lovers can enjoy the stunning beauty of the Rialto Square Theatre, otherwise referred to as the ‘Jewel of Joliet’ and has been called one of the world’s top ten best theaters. If you’re a history buff, you will undoubtedly enjoy the Joliet Area Historical Museum. The museum is your key to learning about how Joliet came to become the powerhouse it is today.

To enhance your learning experience, you can find interactive exhibits that encourage visitors to get hands-on experience to learn the history of Joliet. You will also be able to visit a wide array of galleries like the War Heroes Gallery, Children’s Discovery Room, and the Route 66 Experience.

Joliet Climate

Joliet’s climate is “hot and humid” in the summer and “cold and windy” in the winter. While there are minor fluctuations in humidity, cloudiness, wind direction, and temperature, most of the spring and fall seasons are comfortably warm and sunny with a crisp breeze. This makes spring and fall two of the best times to move or remodel in Joliet. The hottest month is July, with the temperature averaging at 74 degrees Fahrenheit.

One of the tips for moving to the Chicago area is that it is essential to pack your rainwear. Even in Joliet, while the average precipitation is a minimal 36.29 inches in total, it rains through the year in unexpected spurts. The city’s weather is quite heavily impacted by Lake Michigan, which lies to its east. Cool winds from the lake moderate the summer warmth and boost snowfall significantly during winter months. You will need two completely different sets of clothes for summer vs. winter, so you may need a storage unit to save some space. The coldest month is in January with a high of 32 degrees and a low of 18 degrees Fahrenheit.

Joliet Cuisine and Street Food

You could easily justify moving to Joliet just for the food. From quirky twists on European cuisine to the classic American steakhouse, Joliet has cuisines to suit every appetite. Get your fix for traditional Southern soul food in the form of mashed potatoes, pot roast, fried chicken, and gravy. This food has a no-frills, old-fashioned homemade quality to it, making it truly comforting to the palette. You could also indulge in the sizzling char-grilled steaks made in a Grecia style from one of the numerous steakhouses peppered throughout Joliet. Enjoy your steak with a side of double-baked potatoes, a Chicago specialty.

You can also find retro pancake restaurants, Chinese dumpling houses, and authentic Mediterranean food like lavish and hummus sprawled across the city. Downtown Joliet is the true food-lovers paradise. From exotic bar & grills to elegant fine dining, with everything in between, enjoy a night out on the town in Joliet’s cultural heart. With pizzerias, pubs, and coffeehouses, downtown Joliet has you covered. Joliet also has a fair amount of Mexican restaurants you can find throughout the city, including some local favorites such as ‘The Blue Taco’, and ‘El Molcajete.

Joliet Demographics

As of 2010, Joliet had 147, 433 residents with roughly 48,019 households. The density of the population is moderate, with 2,288 people for every square mile. The city has a diverse community made up of Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, Asian, and other races. Caucasians make up around 67%, African Americans make up 16%, and Hispanic individuals comprise almost 28% of Joliet’s population.
Whether you are moving to Joliet alone or with kids, you will find people in the same situation. For those moving to Joliet with kids, the average family size here was 3.56. Of the approximate 48,000 households, 53% were married couples, 30% had children under the age of 18 living with them, and the remainder were non-families. Joliet’s population is pretty even with young and old generations represented in roughly equal measure.
Roughly 40% of residents are under 24 years, 31% are between 25 to 44, and the remainder are over 44, with 8.4% over 64 years old. For young millennials moving to Joliet alone or to start a family, Joliet is a millennial-friendly city as the median age here is 31.7 years. As of 2015, the median income in the average Joliet household was $60,976, which was around $600 lower for families. The city’s per capita income was $24,374.

Joliet Sports

No matter the time of year, Joliet has plenty of fun and engaging sports to keep you occupied. For the golf aficionados, there are four different golf courses scattered around the city —the Joliet Country Club, Inwood Golf Course, Wedgewood Golf Course, and Woodruff Golf Course. Baseball fans moving to Joliet will be glad to hear that a minor league baseball team — the Joliet Slammers — plays in the independent Frontier League.
This team has replaced the former Joliet JackHammers from the Northern League. They play on the DuPage Medical Group Field and have been since the 2011 season, which was also the first season they won.

Probably the most famous sporting venue in town is the Chicago Speedway. The Chicago Speedway in Joliet is renowned for hosting an annual NASCAR Cup Series race as well as many other racing events. During NASCAR’s major races, the city experiences a massive influx of fans, which almost doubles the population of the town.

Joliet Illinois Schools

Joliet Schools

As with any city, moving to Joliet with your kids should always involve preparing for their education by researching nearby schools and universities. Luckily, if you move to Joliet you have ample schooling opportunities. Joliet is home to several universities and colleges, as well as numerous school districts. Some of these are the Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202, Joliet Township High School District 204, Minooka Community High School District 111 and the Oswego Community Unit School District 308.

Each of these districts has major public high schools like the Joliet Central High School, Plainfield South High School, and the Joliet Catholic Academy, to name a few. When it comes to colleges and universities, some of the campuses in the Joliet area are Lewis University, Rasmussen College, the University of St. Francis, and Joliet Junior College.

Joliet Living Costs and Employment

One of the not-so-glamorous things to know before moving to the Chicago area is that it was ranked the 14th most expensive place to live in back in 2016. Suburban Joliet, however, has significantly lower living costs that are on par with most cities in Illinois. For instance, the median price for a home in Juliet, based on real estate measures, is $145,000, which is comfortably below the national average of $320,000. The median income of families in Joliet came up to $70,215.

An interesting fact about Joliet is that it experienced quite a painful economic downturn back in the 1980s, which it has since overcome. Back then, unemployment was at an unprecedented high of 26%, with the downtown area turning into a ghost town. However, there has been a large scale urban revival since then in the form of the aforementioned westward expansion. This 180-degree change allowed Joliet to snag the title of the fastest developing midwestern city in the US by 2011. While Joliet is heavily dependent on its manufacturing industries, new businesses are regularly cropping up on its west side, which continues to support its ongoing revitalization.

If you are moving to Joliet, it won’t be difficult to find employment. Joliet has an outstanding economy at the moment. When we look at the job growth rate, Joliet outperforms the national average significantly. US average job growth has been 24.63% in recent years. Thanks to Joliet’s booming westward expansion, there has been a considerable demand for more jobs with opportunities in almost every industry — from tourism to consumer goods— popping up. This significant resurgence has led Joliet’s job growth rate to recover to a healthy 34.96%. In general, the city has made a massive recovery and offers fresh and fast-growing career opportunities.

Joliet Transportation

Those moving to Joliet will be happy to hear that this city has almost all kinds of private and public transport available. Taxis and car services like Uber are popular options for getting around in Joliet. Joliet’s road system makes it a major transportation hub with highways Route 66, 52, 30, and 6 as well the Interstate 55 and 80 running through Joliet. Joliet also serves as a crucial port between the Michigan Canal and the rest of Illinois. Joliet even has its own regional airport.

If you are moving to Joliet alone, you might need to own a car, but there are numerous public transportation options. The brand new (2018) Joliet Transportation Center connects Joliet to downtown Chicago via the Metra commuter train line. There is also an Amtrak line that connects Joliet to Chicago as well as St. Louis, Los Angeles, and San Antonio.

If you prefer to travel by air, the Joliet Regional Airport is conveniently close - near Interstate 55, off of Jefferson Street. Additionally, to the north, close to the village of Romeoville, you can find Lewis University Airport. Visitors can conveniently rent cars or taxis to tour the city from these airports. Busses are also accessible in Joliet. The PACE bus system provides Joliet with local bus services that leave the city six days a week. They depart from their terminal in downtown Joliet each hour.

Joliet Hospitals

With any city, one of the things to know before moving to Joliet is how accessible its healthcare facilities are. Currently, Joliet has one large hospital that is within the city limits. This is known by the locals as St. Joe’s Hospital or the ‘Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.’ It is located on the west side of the river. Another accessible hospital near Joliet is the Silver Cross Hospital, which now falls within the city limits of New Lenox on the east side of Joliet. AMITA Bolingbrook Adventist Hospital in Will County is a third common choice.
