Orland Park History
Orland Park has witnessed dramatic growth in the past few decades. Orland Park’s current status as a retail and commercial hub successfully hides the town’s humble beginnings. It’s interesting past should be one of the many things to know before moving to Orland Park.
The village was established on a railroad route and started gradually growing outward. Today, Orland Park still holds a piece of its history as seen in some of the city’s first establishments. These include a bank, a number of old shops, and Twin Towers which are situated in the town center. The Twin Towers was a Methodist church and currently is the city’s only building on the National Register of Historic Places. The town center is surrounded by some of Orland Park’s earliest residential areas.
The Methodist Church and one grade school were the focal points of the early community. The area was called the English Settlement and was situated to the east. Currently, it is occupied by commercial establishments in the village. Some of the early settlers of Orland Park were Henry Taylor, Thomas Hardy, and the family of John Humphrey. Taylor moved in 1834 and Hardy arrived in 1836, while Humphrey’s family relocated from England in 1848. Humphrey, who was only 10-years old when his family moved to Orland Park, played an important role in the development of the village.
The settlement of the English was followed by the arrival of people from Luxembourg and Germany in the 1840s. The original Hostert family cabins that form the southern end of the original village area commemorate the settlement of the Luxembourgers and Germans.
John Humphrey is widely considered to be the ‘father’ of Orland Park. At the age of 21, he started working for a wagon train going to California but later returned to work with his family. The naming of the village is a different story altogether and Humphrey played a crucial role in it.
In 1879, the Wabash, St. Louis & Pacific Railroad built a rail line through the area. They had planned a town center for the railroad stop and demarcated the area. Humphrey purchased a large piece of land around the planned town center. The Wabash had named the railroad stop Sedgewick, but the local people under the leadership of Humphrey changed the name to Orland Park.
Humphrey was an important public figure in Orland Park and contributed to its growth. In 1870, he was elected to the House of Representatives and 16 years later to the state senate. Humphrey served as the first president after the village was incorporated in 1892. The Orland Historical Society manages the second house of Humphrey, which he purchased in 1881.
Orland Park has come a long way from its humble beginnings. The village has very beautifully preserved its past along with the present. The old commercial and residential areas of Orland Park are a reminder of its rich heritage.

The village is surrounded by Tinley Park in the southeast, Oak Forest in the east and Palos Park and Palos Heights in the north.
