Plymouth History
Plymouth’s early beginnings date back to the pre-Columbian period, somewhere between 1400 and 1500 A.D. The Dakota Natives were some of Plymouth’s first occupants, with a settlement at the north end of Medicine Lake. The first European settler, Antoine LeCounte, arrived in 1848, however, he didn’t settle on the land until 1852. He built Plymouth’s first cabin, which is now known as East Medicine Lake Boulevard. The town began to develop in 1855 with the establishment of a gristmill among other buildings. The settlement began to gain popularity, and the name ‘Plymouth’ was given by the Hennepin County Board of Commissioners.
After the American Civil War, the city saw many civic changes. The population began to increase, roads were constructed to assist with travel, and Medicine Lake became a popular tourist attraction.
