A Quick History of Romeoville, Illinois
This land plot alongside the Des Plaines River was initially inhabited by a few of the many Indigenous Tribes that populated Illinois before European settlers arrived on the U.S. shores. It is likely that among the first European settlers to explore this land was a missionary named Father Jacques Marquette alongside his companion, a geographer named Louis Jolliet, who would later become the nearby town’s namesake Joliet.
It was not until about 150 years later, in 1816, when the Michigan and Illinois shipping canal was set for construction to connect Lake Michigan to the Illinois River, that Europeans began settling in what is now Romeoville. For this project to continue, Congress acquired a large land area for workers to settle and form developments near the Canal. As production continued, President Jackson ordered the Indian Removal Act, which resulted in the remaining Indigenous people leaving behind their towns to be replaced by more settlements. One of these settlements was the township of Romeo, named after the famous Shakespearian character. The city was later renamed Romeoville in 1895 once it was proclaimed as a village.
As the Canal continued in production, the economy of Romeoville only grew. Their quarries became limestone distributors, other well-known towns like Lockport, Bolingbrook, and Joliet. Romeoville makes for a perfect spot to commute as it is near Interstates 55 and 355, which leads right into the heart of the city. It’s a quaint spot away from the city’s craziness but close enough that a day trip or a speedy commute is an easy task.
