Use the information in this guide to help you decide if Satellite Beach, Florida, is a suitable location for you to settle down. Upon moving to Satellite Beach, consider utilizing mini mobile storage containers or portable storage containers to make the move easier.
Satellite Beach History
In 1956, Percy L. Hedgecock, his brother-in-law, Jimmy Caudle, and cousin, Dumont Smith, traveled from North Carolina to present-day Satellite Beach. Here, they purchased a 130-acre plot of beachside land where they envisioned building a thriving community. Over five months, the men had built seven homes. During this time, the demand for real estate was high due to the influx of aerospace workers at Cape Canaveral and Patrick Air Force Base.
The population continued to rise, and the need to establish community services and zoning regulations became apparent. On August 3, 1957, Satellite Beach was officially incorporated as a municipality. Soon after, a contest was held to determine the name of the city. A woman by the name of Evelyn Price won the contest, and thus the name of Satellite Beach came about. Percy L. Hedgecock served as the city’s first mayor for 16 years, while Wiley White became the first councilman. In 1964, another contest was held to decide on the city’s slogan. This time, a woman named Phyllis Koerner won with the phrase “where progress prevails.”
Throughout the 1970s and 80s, softball was a popular sport in Satellite Beach. Mayor Hedgecock led the city’s three teams, the Comets, Mets, and Rockets, to multiple championships. As a result of the sport’s growing popularity, Mayor Hedgecock ensured that recreational facilities and softball fields were available for the youth. Satellite Beach has hosted 11 National Championship Tournaments and has earned the title of “The Softball Capital of the World.”
Satellite Beach has always been a city built upon serving the community. Much of the city’s infrastructure was made with volunteer labor using donated materials from the community residents. Among these buildings includes the first civic center, city hall, the fire department, and the library. In 1967, Satellite Beach’s first library–which is the present-day city hall–was constructed and received 6,000 books that were all donated. The original recreation center was established in 1968 using funds from the little league concession stand. In 1977, the volunteer fire department purchased and donated land for a new fire station.
