The history of Vero Beach goes further back than most places in the United States. An archeological dig in 1915 found human bones mixed in with bones from animals from the Pleistocene era (2.5million to 11,700 years ago). There has been some debate on whether or not these bones came after the animal bones, but in 2006, a picture of a mammoth was found carved on a bone in the same area. It seems that the carvings were made more than 11,000 years ago. So it appears that humans have been enjoying Vero Beach for most of our history!

Modern Vero Beach was settled in the latter half of the 1800s. Henry T. Gifford was one of the first settlers, and he started his own business and built his own home. The house still stands today and is located near the City Hall of Vero Beach. The name “Vero” came from Henry’s wife, Sarah. She suggested naming it after the Latin word meaning “to speak the truth.” While it was initially just “Vero,” the city was officially renamed Vero Beach in 1925.

As of 2020, 17,884 residents live in Vero Beach, Florida. The population has been growing at an annual rate of 1.89%. The demographic breakdowns are 14,554 Caucasians, which make up 87.90% of Vero Beach, 1,223 Black or African Americans, 256 Two or More Races, 225 Some Other Race, 179 Asians, 112 American Indian and Alaska Native, and 9 Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander. The median age for Vero Beach adults is 53.3 years old. The male median age is 53.2 years old, and it is 53.4 years old for females.

The primary language in each household is similar to other parts of Florida, with 88.0% of residents speaking only English, while 9.45% speak Spanish, and 2.1% speak other Indo-European languages. In addition, 0.3% only speak Asian and Pacific Island languages, and 0.3% speak other languages.

Vero Beach, like most of Florida, is a tax-friendly community. The sales tax rate for Vero Beach is 7.0%, which is 0.3% lower than the United States average of 7.3%. The income tax rate for Vero Beach is 0.0%, while the average tax rate for the United States is 4.6%.

Vero Beach has enjoyed a growing job market, increasing by 1.8% over the last year. Within the next ten years, Vero Beach predicts to see 38.4% job growth, higher than the expected average in the United States of 33.5%.

Vero Beach, like most of Florida, can get a bit warm in summer. In July and August, the average high temperature is just over 90 degrees. That said, the winters are lovely, with an average high in the mid-70s and lows averaging in the low-50s during the winter months. Also, Vero Beach averages 54 inches of rain each year.

Vero Beach offers so many great places to visit. The first place we recommend visiting is the McKee Botanical Garden. in 1922, founders Arthur McKee and Waldo Sexton purchased 80-acres of property on the Indian River. The founders were able to hire landscape architects to make the garden become what it is today. The botanical garden is well known to have an award-winning orchid collection, fly trapping pelican flowers, and exotic wildlife. There are over 10,000 native and tropical plants in the garden. It’s also an excellent time for kids with a special section just for them, appropriately called “The Children’s Garden.“

The Vero Beach Museum of Art (VBMA) is another wonderful place to visit. VBMA was founded in 1978 by the Alliance for the Arts. This nonprofit organization has a total of 54,509 square feet. This museum is considered a must-see for art lovers in Florida. The Vero Beach Museum of Art contains works ranging from paintings, sculptures, and even art glass.

Seagrape Trail is also a fun place to visit in the summer. This beach trail will let you escape from the real world. From March thru October, sea turtles use the beach as a nesting habitat. Visitors will have the opportunity to see the eggs hatch and watch the baby turtles start their journeys back to the sea (from an appropriate distance).

If shopping is your thing, Vero Beach Outlets has you covered. This outlet mall has more than 40 name-brand stores offering discounts of up to 65%. This outlet mall is nearly 340,000 square feet. Some of the high-end stores include Michael Kors, Polo Ralph, Nike, and even Coach.

Vero Beach has fantastic medical facilities. It all started in 1932 when the Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital was built. Garnnet Radin, the hospital founder, made sure that each patient was taken care of properly. The nonprofit hospital now contains 332 rooms with over 2,000 employees. Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital is well known for Orthopedic Surgery and is rated the top hospital in Florida. The hospital offers endoscopy services, neurosurgery techniques, and vascular surgery. There are also 43 rooms for life-threatening events. If you plan to start a family, this hospital is a great place to have your baby. The hospital helps more than 1,200 newborn babies to this world each year.

In Vero Beach, there are great options when it comes to enrolling your kids in school. Osceola Magnet Elementary serves students in grades k-5. With a total of 534 students, Osceola Magnet is ranked in the top 64 best elementary schools in Florida. Sebastian Charter Junior High is another outstanding school in Vero Beach. It is ranked 225 best middle schools in Florida. This middle school contains 266 students in grades 6-8. Lastly, Vero Beach High school is ranked 155th best high school in Florida. It has 2,926 students in grades 9-12. The average graduation rate for Vero Beach High School is 93%. The average SAT score is 1180, and the average for the ACT is 26.
