MI-BOX Moving Guide to Viera, Florida
The Duda family’s roots run deep in Viera, Florida. Slovak immigrant Andrew Duda and his three sons, John, Andrew Jr., and Ferdinand, essentially created the city and its legacy. This family had years of experience in environmental stewardship and land management, which is a key factor in why Viera grew to be as successful as it is today. In the early 1940s, the Duda family decided to purchase a 43,000-acre plot of land in Brevard County, which they used to start and grow their farming business. Andrew’s three sons, also known as the Three Seniors, were the visionaries in the Duda business. They were responsible for acquiring land and diversifying business operations. By the 1970s, the Three Seniors were to take over and expand the family business. To provide fresh produce all year round, the brothers purchased more land in Texas and California.
In the 1980s, Brevard County became a very populated area, and a plan to establish a community on the Duda land was set into motion by Florida’s state. Viera, which translates to “faith” in Slovak, was officially established in 1989. Soon after, a championship golf course, a home building division, and a commercial sales division were added to the Duda family operations.
Other milestones in Viera’s history include 1991 when 56 acres of land were donated to the city to create the Brevard Zoo. The following year, the Space Coast Stadium and Spring Training Center opened. Hammock Lake became the first established residential community with the generous donation of 74 acres from the Viera Company. Between 2001 and 2003, Williams Elementary opened, and in 2006, Viera High School opened to the public. In 2008, the 5,200-acre Viera Wilderness Park was approved. This land has since remained undeveloped in an attempt to protect Viera’s natural resources and wildlife. In 2015, the Duda brothers were inducted into Florida’s Agriculture Hall of Fame, where their legacy continues to live on. Lastly, one of the city’s most notable accomplishments is receiving recognition for being one of the top 25 master-planned communities in the state of Florida.
